Objective: To investigate the effects of virtual reality technology training using the sling device on the upper limb function of hemiplegic stroke patients. Methods: Sixty hemiplegic stroke patients were divided randomly into treatment group and control group (n=30 each). Both groups were given routine rehabilitation therapy, but the treatment group also received virtual reality technology training using the sling device. Both groups were treated for 4 weeks. All the patients were assessed with the Fugl Meyer upper limb assessment (FMA), the modified Barthel index (MBI) and the Brunnstrom staging (including the upper limb and hand) before and after the treatment. Results: After 4 weeks of treatment, all the assessments showed significant improvements compared to those before the treatment. After the treatment, the FMA,MBI scores and the Brunnstrom staging of the upper limb in the treatment group were significantly better than those in the control group (P<0.05). But there was no significant difference in the Brunnstrom staging of hand between the two groups after training (P>0.05). Conclusion: The virtual reality technology training using the sling device can improve the upper extremity function and abilities of daily living of hemiplegic stroke patients.
