Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of using a catheter balloon dilation to treat cricopharyngeal achalasia after radiation therapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods: Thirty-eight patients with cricopharyngeal achalasia were divided into balloon dilation group and routine group randomly(n=19 for each). Balloon dilation group was given routine swallowing training and balloon dilation, and routine group was only given routine swallowing training. Full oral-taken or four week-training was taken as terminal point of training. Patients were evaluated by Functional Oral Intake Scale(FOIS) and a videofluoroscopic swallowing study before and after therapy. Results: Scores of FOIS assessment in two groups were increased after therapy (P<0.05), more significantly in balloon dilation group (P<0.05). Cricopharyngeal opened greater after therapy in two groups (P<0.05), more significantly in balloon dilation group than in routine group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Catheter balloon dilation showed great effectiveness in treating nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients with cricopharyngeal achalasia induced by radiation therapy, which can greatly improve the ability of food intake. |
