Objective: To investigate the effects of six-character formula with inspiratory muscle training on pulmonary function in stroke patients with hemiplegia, especially those with pulmonary dysfunction. Methods: A total of 75 enrolled patients with hemiplegia were randomly divided into six-character formula combined with inspiratory muscle training group (SCF+IMT), inspiratory muscle training group (IMT) and control group, 25 cases in each group. All patients were given routine rehabilitation training for 12 weeks while IMT group performed inspiratory muscle strength training and SCF+IMT group received both the six-character formula breathing training and inspiratory muscle training additionally. Pulmonary function and inspiratory muscle function were evaluated before and after training. Results: The pulmonary ventilation indexes FEV1 and MVV were significantly higher than baseline in both SCF+IMT group and IMT group. After training, SCF+IMT group performed significantly better than IMT group. As for inspiratory muscle function, MIP and PIF were significantly higher than baseline in both SCF+IMT group and IMT group. After training, MIP and PIF in SCF+IMT group were significantly higher than those in inspiratory muscle training group. Conclusion: Compared with the inspiratory muscle training alone, six-character formula combined with inspiratory muscle training in patients with hemiplegia can significantly improve the pulmonary function and inspiratory muscle function. |
