Objective: We conducted this meta analysis in order to systematically review the effectiveness of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) for tennis elbow. Methods: We systematically searched relevant randomized controlled trials published up to August 2017 by searching PubMed, Embase, Cochrane and Web of science. Two reviewers independently screened studies according to the selection criteria. They also extracted data and evaluated methodological quality of included studies. Then meta analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.3. Results: A total of 10 trials were included, involving 928 patients. The analysis of results indicated ESWT group yielded an improved mean reduction in pain score [MD=-9.05, 95% CI (-12.93, -5.18), P<0.00001] and a mean increase in grip strength [MD=3.45, 95% CI (2.46, 4.43), P<0.00001] compared with control group. Conclusion: The results of this meta analysis demonstrated that ESWT can alleviate the pain and improve activity function of tennis elbow patients. Physicians should consider using ESWT as a routine alternative to tennis elbow treatment. |
